We were delighted to welcome Dr Ajith Parlikad, Head of Asset Management Group at the University of Cambridge, Ajith gave a truly engaging talk on Innovation in Asset Management and the use of Digital Twins. The substantial number of questions that arose following his talk demonstrated the high levels of interest in the area. Our thanks to Ajith Parlikad for taking the time to travel down to London to visit the Institute.

Abstract: We are living in a digital era. It is evident that the practice of maintenance and asset management has the potential to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of this digital revolution. Concepts such as Industrial Internet of Things, Cyber Physical Systems and Digital Twins are now seen as major opportunities for companies in the manufacturing and infrastructure sectors to improve their products, processes and services. The linkage between the real world and the virtual world enabled by these emerging technologies - supported by new data analytics and innovative machine learning techniques - allow optimised maintenance of industrial systems. This session will explore this opportunity by focussing on our latest research on data-driven prognostics of asset failures, predictive maintenance, and asset fleet optimisation using Cyber-Physical Systems.

Bio: Dr Ajith Parlikad is Reader in Asset Management at Cambridge University Engineering Department (CUED) and a Co-Investigator for the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction and the Centre for Digital Built Britain at Cambridge. He leads a research team focused on examining how data and digital technologies can be exploited to improve asset investment and maintenance decision-making. His research has been funded by the EPSRC, Innovate UK, EU H2020 and Industry. Dr Parlikad sits on the steering committees of the IFAC Working Group on Advanced Maintenance Engineering, Services and Technology and the UK Digital Twin Hub. Dr Parlikad's current research focuses on the development of digital twins of complex asset systems bringing together data from disparate sources to improve infrastructure asset management.
