Queen Mary Turing PhD student, Keri Grieman, will present her research project at the Turing Research Showcase - 24 September 2020

Keri Grieman, Doctoral Student (the Turing Doctoral Cohort of 2019) will present her research at the Turing Research Showcase that is held on Thursday, 24 September, 10am-7pm.
Keri is a technology-law focused researcher interested in the regulation of emerging technologies. Keri's research areas include regulation of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly automated transport and medical applications; privacy and data collection; smart cities; and interactive entertainment.
In her PhD, Keri is working on the regulation of AI causing accidental death. While the technological advancement in AI has lead to a bevy of exciting potential applications such as self-driving vehicles, the regulation of such technologies has not yet caught up. Important questions to be answered include who or what to regulate, when to regulate, and how to regulate. Keri is grateful for the opportunity to work with the Turing's researchers in order to glean insight into the AI process in areas such as transportation and medicine.
At the Turing Research Showcase event, a virtual research showcase for the student community, Keri will co-present a poster on her research into the regulation of AI and corresponding explainability practices.
Given the law's focus on regulating humans, regulation of AI may require a re-imagining of some core legal concepts. Civil wrongs (as opposed to criminal wrongs) focus on a duty of care, breach of duty, causation, and harm. There are questions such as foreseeability and reasonableness: was the harm reasonably foreseeable? Did a person act reasonably to prevent a harm occurring? These questions are more difficult where an AI is involved: a human is not making 'decisions' at all levels, and interpreting why decisions were made becomes increasingly difficult the more complex the AI.
