Interests

Professor Sean Gong is Principal Investigator on a new project funded by the Alan Turing Institute: 'Deep Learning for Large-Scale Video Semantic Search'. One of the most demanding and requested forms of data analysis is video semantic content analysis for fast search and summarisation of very large quantities of unprocessed (unstructured) videos of urban daily activities. To that end, robust and scalable algorithms are required for very fast human event recognition, estimation of both individual and population movement, and searching individual people and/or categories of people and objects (semantic search) in large scale video data from diverse multiple sources city wide. Such data analytics capabilities have become an essential tool not only for fighting crime, but also for enabling more efficient and safer transport and roads, cleaner and more user friendly urban environment design in emerging smart cities.

Sean's work is also on domain transfer learning, distance metric learning, zero-shot learning (also considering person re-identification as a special case of zero-shot learning), and deep learning. He has published research papers in computer vision and machine learning and five edited books. He founded Queen Mary’s Computer Vision Laboratory and has supervised over 50 research students and postdoctoral researchers, one of whom Eddy Zhu won the 2016 Sullivan Prize - the UK Best PhD Thesis in Computer Vision awarded by the British Machine Vision Association. In 2017 he won the Queen Mary Academic Commercial Enterprise Award. A commercial system built on the patents and software from his research won the 2017 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Technical Innovation for Law Enforcement Video Forensics Technology, and the 2017 Aerospace Defence Security Innovation Award for "revolutionary solution to reviewing CCTV footage".
